The Natural History Museum’ warehouse officially opened in 1995.
The Zoology area is approximately 3,500 square meters and has over 1200 species of mammals. There are 12,000 mammal specimens currently stored there.
The oldest “occupant” is a skull of a Risso’s dolphin, collected from a stranding on the coast of Jersey, Channel Islands in 1575.
Amongst the collection, some mammals have already vanished from our echo system. The most recent (declared functionally extinct in 2007) is the Chinese river dolphin. They also have examples of the extinct Schomburgk’s deer, extinct by 1938, and the black-manned lion of the Cape, extinct by 1860.
The space is use mainly by scientists’ staff from the Natural History Museum or researchers from outside the Museum.
