Vega Sicilia

For decades Vega Sicilia stood more or less alone, like a monument in a Monument Valley denuded of all other rocky outcrops. It towered above not only the other wines of its region, the banks of the River Duero between Valladolid and Aranda de Duero – a region that did not acquire D.O. status until 1982 and was mainly known in the past for the light red wine called Clarete – but also above all the other wines of Spain. The title given to its top vintage selection, Único, (The Only One), may sound arrogant but it is also truthful.

For a year, every month, I photographed the land and the making of Vega Sicilia.

Vega Sicilia

Depuis des décennies, Vega Sicilia se tient plus ou moins seul, comme un monument dans Monument Valley dénudée de tout autres affleurements rocheux. Il domine non seulement les autres vins de sa région, sur les rives de la rivière Duero entre Valladolid et Aranda de Duero - une région qui n'a pas obtenu l’ AOC avant 1982 et qui été connu pour un vin rouge léger appelé Claret - mais également au-dessus de tous les autres vins d'Espagne. Le titre donné à sa sélection grand cru, Único, (le seul), peut paraître arrogant, mais est dès plus exact.

Pendant 1 an, chaque mois, j’ai photographié les terres et la fabrication de Vega Sicilia.
